The Essential River Trip
A four-day rafting journey on the San Juan River.
“Hey there wild river, teach me to flow . . . .”
The setting for our sessions will be the San Juan River, flowing 26 miles from Bluff, Utah to Mexican Hat, Utah. Over millions of years, the San Juan River
has carved through thousands of feet of multi-hued sandstone to form a deep canyon of rugged beauty. Ancestral Puebloans farmed nearby mesas 1000
years ago. Pioneers and outlaws knew this country well. Bighorn sheep, beaver, ravens, and peregrine falcons live here now. The San Juan River is
world-famous for its natural history, archaeology, and wilderness quality.
In July, the current alternates from calm meanders to flowing rapids (Class 1 and 2) and are easy and fun. You can learn how to row one of the big oar rafts,
paddle a two-person inflatable kayak, or just watch the stunning geology unfold before you.
Discussions will take place at our riverside camps under the shade of a cottonwood grove. We sleep on sandy beaches, beneath towering walls, and under
a sky full of stars. Our staff prepare hearty meals; fajitas, river lasagna cooked in a Dutch oven over a bed of coals, and perhaps a pineapple upside-down cake.
We have carefully planned every detail to support your experience.
